Facebook has added a Dislike button, but just not the place it was requested for.
The new Dislike button is currently added to Messenger only. Back before, people made the demand for a Dislike button, Mark Zuckerberg introduced “Reactions” to the Facebook and justified that adding a Dislike button would fuel hatred on Social Media. Instead of adding this feature to the News Feed, Facebook tried it on Messenger. This feature consist of Six already known [Heart eyes, LOL, Wow, Sad, Angry, Thumbs up] reactions and one new reaction of “Dislike ” or as Facebook likes to call it a “No button”. It goes on like, if you want to react to a message on Messenger instead of typing a message you could directly react to it. This feature would feel familiar to IOS users because, IOS already has a feature resembling to this in which you can react to a message rather than typing.
Facebook confirmed this feature to Techcrunch, saying “We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message.” So this means not everyone has access to it now but if people enjoy it, Reaction feature could roll out to every user.
Almost exactly a year ago, Facebook launched Reactions and reported over 300 Billion reactions sent.”Love” is the most used reaction making up more than half of all the reactions. Noticing the success of Emoji Reaction, this feature might make Messenger more enjoyable and easy to express the feeling of user.
People naturally will see it as a Dislike button but Facebook sees it more as a “No” button. Imagine a friend of you asking for Picnic plan on a messenger group this feature might come into role but as NO not as a Dislike.
To compete with Snapchat, Line and Google’s bunch of messaging apps Facebook will need to make the messenger app more convenient and moreover Unique because thats what people want. The company hopes to make Voting and quick logistics easier. As very few people use Messenger to Discuss plans.
