Microsoft’s research labs is working on pre-touch sensing technology. The technology works like Samsung Air Command functionality available in its Note devices which lets a user hold the S-Pen stylus above the display to interact with it without touching the screen. The technology removes touching from the equation almost entirely.
Here’s an example, suppose you’re using a video player which displays on-screen controls as your finger approaches towards the display screen. If the device detects that it has been held in one hand, the on-screen controls will appear on the side of display screen when a user thumb approaches the display screen. The pre-touch technology can also be used in a web browser to highlight links as a single finger hovers over the display or swipe between browser tabs with a two-finger gesture.
The pre-touch technology is really exciting and has the potential to change the way, we currently use our touch screen devices.
Here is a video of Pre-touch sensing works.
